Daily Show on iTunes with Multi-Pass

Apple has added a few new shows to the iTunes Music Store. You can now download Comedy Central favourites The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report for the usual price of US$1.99 each per episode.
Apple also unveiled a new feature called iTMS Multi-Pass where you can pre-purchase the next 16 episodes for $9.99. The episodes you buy will be automatically delivered to you just like podcasts. Other Comedy Central series available for download at iTMS include South Park, Drawn Together and Comedy Central Stand-Up.

I’m trying to understand who this is marketed to. Aren’t the episodes available for from on Comedy Central’s web site? Available as torrents? Recordable using a DVR or Tivo?
