That Prince, he’s a savvy fella. He received a lot of flak when it was first announced that he was going to give away his latest album, Planet Earth, free with the Mail on Sunday newspaper in the UK and Ireland.

On July 15th, more than 3 million copies were distributed — making his music available to more people than ever, certainly for a long time since his heydays in the 80’s. To compare, his last CD,3121“> 3121, only sold 80,000 copies. He didn’t even bother to release the Planet Earth CD for sale in record stores at all.

The new CD certainly worked wonders for Prince’s profile in the UK. His UK tour dates in August and September have all been fully sold out.
