Indie horror films
Horror films have been having a resurgence in recent years. I suppose the two movies that brought the genre back to the mainstream were Scream and The Blair Witch Project. Hardly a year goes by without at least a couple of horror films being in the summer/fall blockbuster list.
I am pleased to report that the indie horror film scene is alive and well. One emerging trend is the neo-grindhouse movement. “Grindhouse” was popular in the 50’s — they were low-budget movies featuring shock value and exploitation. Neo-grindhouse started with Saw in 2004, which was grimy, dark and violent. Recent neo-grindhouse movies include The Devil’s Rejects, Hostel and Wolf Creek.
Indie and neo-grindhouse horror continues in 2007 and 2008 thanks to production companies like Red Scream Films LLC, which specializes in horror films. Upcoming flicks from Red Scream include Terminal Descent (2007) and Blind (2008).
