There are over 2 billion people with mobile phones worldwide. In my day job, I work with a mobile telco that has over 6 million subscribers. That’s a whole lot of customers, and a whole lot of revenue potential.

Almost every single active mobile phone has SMS (Short Messaging Service) capability, and a growing number also supports MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service). Businesses are starting to see mobile messaging as a powerful marketing tool.

SMS marketing is not a new area for Europe and Asia, and it is just starting to catch on in the US. How can your business benefit from mobile marketing? What do you need to do?

First off, you will need a mobile website in addition to your current website. Good mobile website design is very important. On mobile phones, you will have limited screen space to clearly communicate key messages to current or potential customers.

You should also investigate mobile marketing software. This type of software or hosted service allows you to easily create an assortment of text, voice, and multimedia messaging campaigns using graphical templates. You should also be able to access detailed analytics modules to track important metrics, such as subscriber database tools, keyword analytics, geographical reporting and raw traffic data exports.
