Apple iTunes Store, the biggest online media store for music, TV and movies, is under pressure. First off, MTV Networks, Verizon Wireless and Real are forming a new company called Rapshody America to directly attack the iTunes Store market. They aim to sell music for the mobile phone, PC and MP3 player.

Next, NBC has announced that they will not renew their contract to sell TV series through the iTunes Store. The damage? You won’t be able to buy NBC shows such as The Office or Heroes from iTunes, come December. Universal Music has already chosen not to renew their contract, instead going on a month to month basis with Apple.

Does this mean that there are dark days ahead for Apple? Apple showed everyone that it was possible to legally sell music, movies and TV online. In fact, they sold billions of pieces of media. And millions of iPods as well, of course.

I’m sure Apple will be able to get out of this predicament, although there are certainly in for a rough time.

Their key differentiator is covering well-known conferences and events, recording speeches.

I also enjoy Social Innovations Conversations, their other series of programming that is an initiative of the Center for Social Innovation at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Social Innovations Conversations features prominent social change activists such as Bill Drayton and Muhammad Yunus.

BMW and Random House have teamed up to bring you BMW Audio Books. This is a unique series of specially- commissioned short stories showcasing the work of some of the finest contemporary writing talent.

Each gripping tale is free to download and a new book will be available every two weeks. There are already two audiobooks available : Beautiful Ride by Don Winslow and Master of The Storm by James Flint.

I’ve listened to both. Beautiful Ride is a straightforward caper story, while Master of The Storm is a long, weird car ride with you in the driver’s seat. Not surprisingly, BMW cars are featured prominently in the stories, and in the case of Beautiful Ride, a Z4 is more or less the supporting character.

It’s good to see a mainstream company experimenting with new forms of marketing, and taking advantage of the latest trends like podcasting.

Learn Out Loud has released their Top Ten list of the best podcast episodes of the year. All the shows listed are “educational, inspirational and entertaining” - or at least two out of three. The selection is predominantly technology and business oriented, but it should be an interesting pointer to great podcast resources.
